MOLD:

Yes No Have you had a recent water leak or water related problem?   WHY? >>
Within 24 to 48 hours after water intrusion problems mold can begin to grow. Also in areas of high humidity moisture builds up on surfaces and permits the exact same reaction. Areas such as basements, bathrooms, and kitchens tend to have either high humidity and water leaks or other issues.
Yes No Do you see visible mold growth?   WHY? >>
Visible mold growth is the most obvious way to tell if there is a mold issue, and can help us to pin point where the moisture is coming from so that we can identify and treat the whole issue.
Yes No Are you concerned about a musty or mildew smell or water staining?   WHY? >>
Often a musty smell accompanies mold growth; this smell is from the chemical process of the mold breaking down the cellulose material it is growing on. It is possible for mold to grow inside of a wall cavity and take many days of not weeks to show through. Water staining is a sign that water intrusion or moisture is present and may result in mold growth. Cromwell Environmental can investigate the moisture content of the walls helping to pinpoint where mold may be hiding.
Yes No Have you, your family, or coworkers been noticing an increase in allergy or asthma related symptoms while in or around the area of possible contamination?   WHY? >>
The most common side effect of mold is increased allergy related problems or an increase in asthma symptoms. Many people notice these symptoms strengthen when in the home/building and then these symptoms lessen or disappear when outside of the home/building. This could be a strong indications that an allergen is hiding somewhere in the home. If allergy related symptoms suddenly appear or appear after a water loss, mold could be the cause. For more information on allergies or asthma please talk to your physician.
What have you seen mold growing on? Ex: Sheetrock, Carpet, Baseboard
Aprox: Square Footage of visible mold seen?   WHY? >>
Identifying the square footage of mold helps to explain the severity of the problem, so that we can assist you in finding appropriate solutions. In some cases a small amount of mold (under 5 sqft) can be alleviated on your own. Cromwell Environmental can give you the information needed to correctly deal with the situation without causing further contamination to your home/building. In other cases the contamination is more wide spread and if disturbed without proper caution can cause additional airborne contamination throughout the home. If more than 5 sqft of visible mold growth, it is best to have a professional with experience and equipment to deal with the issue.

LBP testing in a private residence
LBP testing of a commercial building(s)

Please answer Yes / No to each of the following.

Yes No Was your home/building built prior to 1978?   WHY? >>
In 1978 lead in paint was banned. Prior to this date lead was used in paint as a pigment and to make the paint wear better. It was most commonly used on high impact surfaces such as door frames, window troughs, and exterior surfaces. Cromwell Environmental can help to identity the areas in the home/building that do contain lead-based paint.
Yes No Are there children or pregnant women living/playing in the home/building?   WHY? >>
The smallest lead dust particles cannot be seen but they can get into the body. The dust and chips from lead-based paint are dangerous when swallowed or inhaled, especially to small children and pregnant women. Lead can affect children’s developing nervous systems, causing reduced IQ and learning disabilities. In adults, high lead levels can cause high blood pressure, headaches, digestive problems, memory and concentration problems, kidney damage, mood changes, nerve disorders, sleep disturbances, and muscle or joint pain. A single, very high exposure to lead can cause lead poisoning. Lead can also affect the ability of both women and men to have healthy children. For more information please go to www.epa.gov
Yes No Are there areas of your home/building that have old peeling/cracking paint?   WHY? >>
Painted surfaces that are not intact (cracks or chipping paint) are a greater risk to occupants. Lead particles enter the body by breathing or swallowing lead dust, or by eating soil or paint chips containing lead. In most cases, lead-based paint that is in good condition is not a hazard. Cromwell Environmental can assist with identifying the areas of the home/building that are hazards and may be in need of stabilization.
Yes No Are you planning to remodel in the near future?   WHY? >>
Removing lead-based paint improperly can increase the danger of exposure. Take precautions before you or your contractor begin remodeling or renovations that disturb painted surfaces (such as scraping off paint or tearing out walls). Cromwell Environmental can help to identity the areas in the home/building that do contain lead-based paint.

Please answer Yes / No to each of the following.

Yes No Was your home/building built prior to 1978?   WHY? >>
In 1978 asbestos was banned. Prior to this date asbestos was used in many household building materials because of its fire retardant properties. Asbestos is a known human carcinogen. Cromwell Environmental can help to identity building materials in the home/building that may be asbestos containing materials.
Yes No Are you planning to remodel in the near future?   WHY? >>
Asbestos fibers can become airborne during improper removal. Removing asbestos improperly can increase the danger of exposure. Take precautions before you or your contractor begin remodeling or renovations that disturb surfaces.

What indoor air quality issues do you suspect in your home/building?   WHY? >>
Indoor pollution sources that emit gases or particles into the air are the primary cause of indoor air quality problems in homes and buildings. Inadequate ventilation can increase indoor air quality problems by not circulating enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources and by not allowing for indoor air pollutants to circulate out of the home/building. Humidity levels and temperature can also effect the concentration of many pollutants.

The EPA lists the following health effects of poor Indoor Air Quality:Immediate effects may show up after a single exposure or repeated exposures. These include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat, headaches, dizziness, and fatigue. Such immediate effects are usually short-term and treatable. Sometimes the treatment is simply eliminating the person's exposure to the source of the pollution, if it can be identified. Symptoms of some diseases, including asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, and humidifier fever, may also show up soon after exposure to some indoor air pollutants. www.EPA.gov

Cromwell Environmental can assist you in discovering what factors in the home/building may be leading to indoor air quality issues, through testing and examining of building structure and operations. We can pin point the origin of IAQ concerns and work with clients and building officials to create a plan to alleviate health effects and remedy problems.
