Mold Regulations in the U.S.

It is important to understand the laws regarding mold. There are both Federal and State laws regarding the sampling and remediation of mold, and they can vary by state. Some states like Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and New York require state licenses to perform mold testing or remediations. Other states have their own regulations or are currently developing rules. Even cities may have their own regulations regarding mold work.

A few laws apply no matter what state you live in. Nationwide, federal law requires asbestos testing on any building materials that are removed or otherwise disturbed (no matter what year the building was built), so almost all mold remediations must test for asbestos. Also, nationwide OSHA standards apply to workplaces with mold, as well as to workers performing mold remediations.
